Flume Covered Bridge
For a few years I had wanted to get a picture of the Flume Covered Bridge in the winter. I finally made the trip in January of 2011. During the spring, summer and fall, there is a charge to get back into the Flume which is located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. During the winter the Visitor's Center is closed for the season and you can walk around the building to see one of the most visited tourist sites in the area. It was cold and there was a lot of snow, but I got the shot I wanted. In the background is Mount Liberty which some people say has the profile of George Washington's face.
Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge...an excuse to use the new camera.
I recently celebrated another birthday. At this point they aren't really that eventful, but I'm grateful to keep having them. I was spoiled by my wife and daughter though with the gift of a new camera. As soon as I opened it (well, actually my 3 year old opened it for me since she LOVES to open presents) I knew that I had to plan a trip to put it to use. It had been awhile since I had been out taking landscape photos. My recent photo outings were to photograph Snowy Owls along the coast of New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

I decided that I wanted to use the new camera at a location that was new to me. That turned out to be Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I have seen photos of the grand mountain vistas from some friends and other nature photographers that spurred my interest in this location. My hope was to get the mountain peaks of the Northern Presidentials with snow still covering them. It turns out I was at least a couple of weeks too late. Mother Nature decided that summer weather needed to arrive in the middle of March this year. As you can see from the photo with the Canada Geese in Cherry Pond, the snow on the peaks is almost non-existent.

Even though I didn't get the snow on the peaks, it was far from a wasted trip. The refuge consists of more than 5000 acres and includes 2 ponds (Cherry Pond and Little Cherry Pond). I didn't make it over to Little Cherry Pond, but I'll definitely be visiting this location on other trips so I'll get there another time. The views across Cherry Pond are nothing short of amazing. In the top photo with the geese you can see the northern Presidential Range including Mts. Adams, Madison, and Washington. The photo to the left is on the viewing platform which shows the Pliny Range, which includes Mts. Starr King, Waumbek, and Pliny. While walking around, with nobody else in site, I enjoyed the views of the mountains, and also saw several geese, ducks, loons, and a heron. I also visualized what it will be like to see the pre-dawn sky, and alpenglow from the shore of the pond. Of course I can't forget the spectacular color displays that will show up in the fall with the foliage. I'll also have to get back next winter for those snowy peaks. Oh my, it looks like I'll have to make several trips back to Pondicherry to experience this fantastic location and all that it has to offer.
Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

Storm at Portland Head
Back in the beginning of September 2010, Hurricane Earl came up the east coast and hit Cape Cod. I was hoping for some great photo opportunities at the Cape, but knew that the police would have access blocked to most of the roads near the water. Instead, I contacted a friend of mine and we decided to head to Portland Head Light in Portland, Maine. As the storm continued up the coast during the night, it kicked out further into the ocean. When we arrived at the lighthouse, the storm was already further out than we had hoped as it tracked northeast toward Nova Scotia. The large waves we had hoped to find weren't there, but the swells, along with high tide, were enough to make for some interesting photographs.
